Check remote response
Lock, unlock, trunk and panic behavior show which commands are reaching the vehicle.

A fob can control door locks, remote functions and, on proximity systems, authorization to start. Programming begins with identifying the vehicle and the exact device—not with assuming every matching shell will work.
How the request is evaluated
A fob can transmit door commands while a separate chip authorizes starting. Battery condition, board identity, frequency and vehicle enrollment all matter when the symptoms are narrowed down.
Lock, unlock, trunk and panic behavior show which commands are reaching the vehicle.
Part numbers, FCC ID and board details help prevent programming an incompatible fob.
A working remote does not prove that the immobilizer recognizes the transponder.
Details that change the job
A remote problem can come from the battery, button contacts, circuit board, incompatible frequency or lost enrollment. The engine may still start because immobilizer authorization can be a separate function inside the same housing.
A clear symptom description is more useful than saying the fob is “dead.” Note which buttons work, whether range changed, whether a spare behaves differently and what the dashboard reports when you try to start.
Diagnose the symptom
Weak or incorrect batteries, damaged buttons, a cracked circuit board, a mismatched part, lost synchronization and vehicle-side issues can produce similar symptoms. Tell us whether the remote unlocks the doors, whether the engine starts and whether another key works.
Those answers help separate a remote-function problem from transponder or proximity authorization. They also reduce the chance of programming a part that is physically wrong for the car.
Part matching
Two fobs can share the same shape while using different electronics. Vehicle trim and production date can also change the compatible part. If you own the fob already, provide clear photos of its labels and disclose whether it was previously used.
Compatibility should be established before the trip whenever possible. A successful button test alone does not prove the transponder or proximity function is correct.
After programming
The final check should cover lock, unlock, trunk or hatch, panic button, passive entry and starting as applicable. If the vehicle has an emergency blade, confirm that it is cut and works in the intended lock.

Possibly, but the part must be compatible and in a usable state. Send the vehicle information and all device identifiers before scheduling.
Remote-button operation and immobilizer authorization can be separate. The transponder or proximity portion may need different diagnosis or programming.
Usually a battery change alone does not require full vehicle programming, but the correct procedure depends on the device and symptom.
Some can, some require resetting, and some cannot be reused for another vehicle. The part and vehicle system determine the answer.
