Preserve the fragment position
Do not add glue, oversized pliers or another key to the cylinder.

A fragment in a door, trunk or ignition should be removed without driving it deeper or damaging the surrounding lock. The next step is to identify where it broke and why.
How the request is evaluated
The goal is not only to remove visible metal. It is to avoid pushing the fragment deeper, contaminating the cylinder or overlooking the wear or binding that caused the break.
Do not add glue, oversized pliers or another key to the cylinder.
Prior stiffness or misalignment may explain why the blade failed.
The recovered pieces can inform identification but should not be glued and reused.
Details that change the job
A broken blade may sit at the face of the lock or deeper behind wafers and shields. Glue, drilling and improvised hooks can move it farther inward or damage components that were still serviceable.
A photo showing the lock and visible fragment can help with preparation. Also explain whether the key was hard to turn before it broke, because the underlying cylinder or alignment problem may still need attention.
Protect the lock
Superglue, drill bits, wood screws and improvised picks can bond the fragment, scar wafers or push the piece beyond an easy retrieval point. If part of the blade is visible, leave it in place and take a clear photo instead of pulling with a tool that may slip.
Tell us whether the fragment is in a door, trunk or ignition; whether the lock was turning when it broke; and whether a spare key exists. That context affects both extraction and what should happen afterward.
Find the cause
A fatigued or bent key can fail even in a healthy lock. A binding cylinder can also overload a good key. After removal, the blade and lock behavior should be reviewed so the same condition is not repeated with the next key.
If the ignition had already been difficult to turn, see ignition repair. If no usable key remains, the job may continue as car key replacement.
Electronic components
On a transponder key, the plastic head can contain the chip needed to start the vehicle. Physical blade replacement and electronic authorization should be treated as separate checks.

It is risky. Adhesive can enter the lock and bond internal parts or the fragment. Leave the keyway clean for controlled removal.
The pieces may provide useful reference, but the correct replacement method depends on wear, break pattern and vehicle security requirements.
Not automatically. The lock should be assessed after extraction. Replacement depends on internal damage or an underlying cylinder problem.
Prioritize a safe vehicle shutdown and location. Do not manipulate the fragment while the vehicle is moving or in an unsafe position.
